Common questions about WantSmith
How does WantSmith work?
Buyers post a "want" describing what they need made. Verified makers browse The Wants board and bid on jobs they can fulfill. The buyer reviews bids, picks a maker, and the two work together to get the item made.
How do I become a verified maker?
Sign up as a maker and fill in your shop name and craft category. Our team manually reviews every maker application before you can bid. You'll receive an email notification once you're approved — usually within 24 hours.
Is WantSmith free to use?
Yes. Creating an account and posting wants or placing bids is completely free during beta. Platform fees may apply in the future when payments are processed through WantSmith directly.
How does payment work?
During beta, payment is arranged directly between buyer and maker. WantSmith does not process payments yet. Always confirm payment details before starting a job. Platform payments via Stripe are coming soon.
What if a maker doesn't deliver?
First, try resolving it through the messaging system. If you can't reach an agreement, use the report button on the want or their profile and our team will review the situation. We take disputes seriously and verified makers who don't deliver can have their verification revoked.
Can I cancel a want after posting?
Yes. Go to your want's detail page and tap "Withdraw this want." If a bid has already been accepted and work is in progress, please message your maker first before cancelling.
Can a maker withdraw a bid?
Yes, makers can withdraw pending bids at any time. Once a bid has been accepted by a buyer, please communicate directly with the buyer before withdrawing.
What counts as handmade?
Anything made by hand or with your own tools — woodworking, leatherwork, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, candles, and more. WantSmith is strictly for original handcraft. Reselling manufactured goods or drop-shipping is not allowed and will result in account removal.
How do I leave a review?
After a buyer marks a job as complete, both the buyer and maker can leave a review from the want detail page or from their dashboard. Reviews are visible on public profiles.
How do I report a problem?
Use the flag button on any want or profile to file a report. Our team reviews every report. For urgent issues, use the ‘Share feedback’ link to reach us.
